Sawing Welsh Slate Blocks

Sawing slate blocks

Large blocks of slate arrive from the quarry know as scants are sawn into pieces on our saw table.  Water is used to keep dust down whilst sawing is in progress.  The pieces will then be cored with six holes and polished to a smooth finish before engraving with the word ‘eggs’.

Splitting Welsh Slate

Today at the workshop we have been splitting slate by taping a chisel with a hammer until it splits the slate into two separate pieces.  The slate pieces will be washed, dried and oiled before applying a black foam pad underneath to protect surfaces.
